The Society of Nineteenth Century Historians supports the scholarly activity of its members with an active research and publication agenda-as well as a community of scholars who collaborate on new projects.

Edited scholarly collections  are a longstanding hallmark of the symposium. SNCH scholars have produced dozens of individual and collaborative books, provided featured content for C-SPAN’S history series, and served as guests on Augusta University’s Research Report podcast.

Edited Collections: Call for Papers

Chapters are invited for a forthcoming book on the broad roles of the 19th century African American press from the antebellum period through the turn of the 20th century. These roles, we propose, extend beyond the function of the African American press as a counterpoint to the white press to present a generative rhetorical space where concepts of citizenship, community-building, and racial identity were crystallized and shared. Contact the editors for more information about available chapters. Posted July 2025.
